The Richton Rebels and Perry Central Bulldogs enjoyed a lot of success earlier this week as three of the county’s four teams got their region schedules underway with wins.
In Richton, the baseball Rebels bounced back from a non-region loss to Enterprise on Saturday with a 6-2 win over Lumberton to start Region 8-1A play on a positive note. Despite being outhit overall by the Panthers, the Rebels scored three runs in the second, another in the third and two more in the fourth to earn the victory.
Wyatt Cochran, Brock Pearson and Colt Daughdrill each had RBIs in the win.
Slade Overstreet went the distance for Richton and overcame four defensive errors to earn the win. Overstreet scattered eight hits and allowed no earned runs. He struck out six and walked four in the 7-inning outing.
The Rebels will look to improve to 2-0 in region play when they travel to Lumberton on Friday for game two of the home-and-away series.
The Lady Rebels are in the midst of a lull in their schedule. They defeated Forrest Co. AHS 11-9 last week and are hoping to get another non-region game in against Bay Springs this week – weather permitting. They will be on Spring Break next week and will look to start region play at home against Resurrection on March 24.

Perry Central baseball coach Jason Oxenrider is shown talking to players during a visit to the mound during Friday’s 13-3 win over Mt. Olive. The Bulldogs followed that win with a double header sweep of Collins on Tuesday, giving them a 2-0 start in region play.

Oxenrider also earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs. He allowed just one hit and struck out eight in six innings of work.
The Dawgs jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game two and closed out the 17-1 win with eight more in the fourth. Carr had four RBIs to lead the way for PCHS. He joined Brandon Sumrall, Kameron Moody and Dailyn Carter with two hits each. Moody and Backstrom homered in the win.
